TEMPERATE GRASSLANDS

Climate:Grassland biomes are large, rolling terrains of grasses, flowers and herbs. There are two different types of Grasslands though, tall-grass and short-grass. Tall-grass grasslands are much more humid and wet with taller grass. The short-grass grasslands are much dryer with shorter grass. Grasslands are usually located at the middle latitudes of a continent. Usually they have a moist continental climate or dry subtropical climates. The temperaters range from -40 degrees in the winter to 70 degrees in the summer. The precipitation amount is usually 10 to 20 inches yearly, primarily from snowfall.

Plants:Grass is the main plant in the Tempereate Grasslands. There are rarely any shrubs or trees found in this biome. There are several types of grass that grow in this biome though. For example buffalo grass, ryegrass, foxtail, wild oats and purple needlegrass. These grasses can survive easily in a fire because of their underground buds and stems. Trees and Shrubs on the other hand cannot survive in a fire. There are also many types of wildflowers that grow on the grasslands also. There are wild indigos, clovers, sunflowers, goldenrods, blazing stars, and asters.

Animals: The grasslands of the world are homes to many diverse animals. Most animals that live on the grasslands are herbivores because there is so much grass. Living on the grasslands is good for the animals because there is no shortage of food and predators cannot hide because it is so flat. Some of the animals on the grasslands are: coyotes, prairie dogs, gophers, antelope, bison, eagles, wild turkey, Canadian geese, bobcats, the gray wolf, fly cathcers, and many diverse bugs. The grasslands are a great place for these animals to live.
